Fellowship Program

Retina Specialists of Alabama, LLC Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship Program

Under the preceptorship of Drs. Robert Morris, Mathew Sapp and Matthew Oltmanns, the Retina Specialists of Alabama Fellowship Program (RSA Fellowship) is a progressive, two-year surgical and medical diagnostic training program. Virtually all modern modalities of vitreoretinal treatment and surgery are utilized by RSA physicians, including investigational modalities within controlled studies. RSA fellows also participate in the care of Birmingham’s Military Veterans and the area’s indigent patients.

The RSA Fellowship is customized to meet the individual skills and interests of each fellow in patient care and research. The fellow is recognized as a physician who has excelled throughout previous training. The fellow’s goal is to make patient care at Retina Specialists of Alabama (RSA) better than it would be in his or her absence, by continual vigilance, compassion, and dedication.

The RSA Fellowship holds weekly fellows’ meetings, which are accredited by the UAB School of Medicine. It proudly coordinates with the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education and offers opportunities in basic and clinical research.

RSA physicians hold faculty appointments in the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and provide clinical/surgical instruction to Ophthalmology Residency program physicians at the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital. Fellows regularly participate in the training of resident physicians.

RSA participates in the American Academy of Ophthalmology San Francisco Fellowship Match Program and is AUPO FCC compliant.
