UAB Department of Ophthalmology/Retina Specialists of Alabama, LLC Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship Program
In 2010, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Ophthalmology and Retina Specialists of Alabama, LLC combined programs to form the UAB Retina Specialists of Alabama Fellowship Program (UAB/RSA). Under the preceptorship of Drs. Robert Morris, Doug Witherspoon, Mathew Sapp and Matthew Oltmanns, the UAB/RSA Retina Fellowship Program is a progressive two-year surgical and medical diagnostic training program. Our fellowship program is accredited by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and is AUPO FCC compliant. Virtually all modern modalities of vitreoretinal treatment and surgery are utilized by UAB/RSA physicians including investigational modalities within controlled studies. Fellows also participate in care for area indigent patients.
The fellowship is customized to meet the individual skills and interests of each fellow in patient care and research. The Fellow is recognized as a physician who has excelled throughout previous training. The fellow’s goal is, to make patient care at RSA better than it would be in his or her absence, by continual vigilance, compassion, and dedication. The fellowship is coordinated with the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education, and the UAB Department of Ophthalmology, and offers opportunities in basic and clinical research. UAB and Retina Specialists of Alabama, LLC physicians hold faculty appointments in the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and provide clinical/surgical instruction to Ophthalmology Residency program physicians at the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital. Fellows regularly participate in this training of resident physicians.
